Character Curriculum
At Beechwood we build successful citizens of the future, we give our students the best possible start by helping them understand that everything at Beechwood school and beyond is built on respect and that good character is as important to their future happiness as academic learning and qualifications.
Our vision at Beechwood School is to enable students to flourish in all areas of their lives, by supporting their development into good citizens who can contribute to and shape society and the wider world, whilst respecting and supporting those who live in it, though the teaching and modelling of good character.

How do we develop character at Beechwood?
Our character development is focused around our three artefacts of Respect, Excellence and Kindness. Character education is an integral part of school life. It underpins our school ethos, dictates our values, and is embedded across the school in the following ways:
Teaching Positive Behaviour
At Beechwood School, we believe positive behaviour is an important part of good character and this is taught within our character curriculum. When everyone behaves in a positive way, it creates a community we can all enjoy. We make our behaviour expectations clear to all through our three artefacts of Respect, Excellence and Kindness giving examples (shown below) of how to demonstrate these values both in lessons and around the school.

Modelling Good Character
Character is primarily formed through the experiences one has. Therefore, we create an environment that embodies each one of our artefacts of Respect, Excellence and Kindness and offers students opportunities to develop positive personal habits such as good time-keeping, good manners, friendly relations in addition to leadership opportunities throughout the school. Every interaction is an opportunity to develop the good character of our students to help them be respectful, kind and excel, every day.
Developing Good Virtues
Our character curriculum is taught in partnership with our PSHCE programme through assemblies and tutor time. Our assembly programme is created to include all of our character virtues, their meaning and the ways in which the virtues are evident in daily life and how important they are in testing life moments. In addition, we devote some tutor time per week to teaching students about each of our character traits.
